In the present review, we will examine the occurrence of circadian and seasonal rhythms in African mole-rats (family Bathyergidae). Biological rhythms are believed to provide an adaptive advantage to organisms. The light-dark cycle is usually the most prominent environmental cue to which animals synchronise their rhythms. These rhythms are generated endogenously and entail the coordination of physiological and behavioural processes to predictable, external environmental rhythms. 2Mammal Research Institute, University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africaīiological rhythms are rhythmic fluctuations of biological functions that occur in almost all organisms and on several time scales.1Department of Zoology and Entomology, University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa. ![]() ![]() ![]() ★ Listed in the American Library Association's 2012 Best Fiction for Young Adults ★ Listed in Best Teen Books of 2011 by Kirkus Reviews ★ Notable Book for Older Readers in the 2011 Children's Book Council of Australia awards ![]() ![]() ★ Longlisted for the 2011 Gold Inky Teenage Choice Award ★ Shortlisted for the 2011 Ethel Turner Prize for Young People's Literature (NSW Premier's Literary Awards) ★ Shortlisted for the 2010 Western Australian Premier's Young Adult Book Award Can Sophie keep her family together, when everything seems to be falling apart?Īn enticing glimpse into high society, the cut and thrust of politics as nations scramble to avert world war, and the hidden depths of a family in exile, struggling to find their place in the world. Sadly curmudgeonly father figure Bobby doesn’t have a big part in this story. This book finds the troubled brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester along with their renegade angle pal, Castiel, down south Georgia way looking into murder and mayhem at a Civil War reenactment. So with as much of an open mind as I could muster, I dove into THE UNHOLY CAUSE. ![]() I was a bit dubious when I got the latest SUPERNATURAL novel for review. I am a diehard horror-head but things that make me giggle are always greatly appreciated. That said, I do think it’s very well written, with two great characters as the monster hunting Winchester brothers, and while not particularly frightening, it is often funny as hell. Lastly, despite its title and premise, I never found it scary. It stars two hunky guys and only has the occasional hot chick as a costar so there’s no real eye candy in it for me. I mean, it’s on the WB, a television network I have no other use for. ![]() Yeah I know, it’s weird and something I don’t admit to everyone. ![]() ![]() Such an enterprise of scrutinizing the historicity of subjects and places is well-trodden terrain in many writers’ work Léger explicitly channels literary and cinematic influences such as Emily Dickinson, Marguerite Duras, Jean-Luc Godard, Sylvia Plath, and W. Freshly translated by Natasha Lehrer and Cécile Menon as Suite for Barbara Loden and published this month by the new London-based publishing initiative Les Fugitives, Léger’s Suite raises resonant points about the nature of influence upon artistic creation, the thin and often tenuous line between fiction and reality, and the impossibility of building biographical pictures without a visible (and wholly participant) narrative voice balancing truths and half-truths, all the while applying the lessons learned from sifting through buried archival materials to one’s own experience-what Léger describes aptly as “my dream of a fictional archive.” ![]() These are some of the questions Nathalie Léger considers in Supplement à la vie de Barbara Loden, her widely-acclaimed and prix-winning 2012 book. ![]() How does one begin to write the history of a woman whose narrative has been submerged, both beneath that of her husband and beneath time itself? How does one set about reconstructing a life from scant fragments, oral histories that carry with them their own subjective-and often biased-versions of the “truth”? Is it even possible to excavate a female artist from obscurity when most artists often inadvertently and unwittingly take part in their own self-erasure? ![]() ![]() It's possible, but I doubt it, and deliberate choice or not it gives the book a strange feel. It's just possible that this is a deliberate choice, since the book is really about its heroine, Jane Withersteen, and from her perspective all these things sort of happen off somewhere else and then she hears about them after the fact. ![]() Strangest of all, though, is that almost all the actijon scenes in the book, particularly the gun fights, take place off stage. I'm not in any way associated with LDS, nor do I have much patience for their theology, but this seems way over the top and, frankly, weird. Very much like the way the "Da Vinci Code" depicts the Catholic Church. It's the same sort of depiction as in the long middle section of "Study in Scarlet" (which is often left out or skipped) - Mormons are secretive, conniving, dastardly, unprincipled, &c. Much more odd and off-putting was the fact that the villain (or "antagonist") is kind of Mormonism as a whole, which is depicted as a kind of home-grown fascism in the bud. A lot more romance than I was expecting, which isn't a bad thing particularly, just unexpected. ![]() A strange book, but maybe I'm just showing my ignorance of westerns. ![]() ![]() They allow a deeper level of involvement from my readers."
