The lion Aslan gives his life to save one of the children he later rises from the dead, vanquishes the White Witch, and crowns the children Kings and Queens of Narnia. In Narnia, the siblings seem fit to fulfill an old prophecy and find themselves adventuring to save Narnia and their own lives. Lucy's three siblings are with her on her third visit to Narnia. The youngest, Lucy, visits Narnia three times via the magic of a wardrobe in a spare room. In the frame story, four English children are relocated to a large, old country house following a wartime evacuation. Most of the novel is set in Narnia, a land of talking animals and mythical creatures that is ruled by the evil White Witch. Like the other Chronicles, it was illustrated by Pauline Baynes, and her work has been retained in many later editions. Although it was originally the first of The Chronicles of Narnia, it is volume two in recent editions that are sequenced by the stories' chronology. This book, at page 87, gave me a dull headache. The punctuation was unique and it was a stream of consciousness sort of thing which was jarring at times because it was jumpy and choppy. It was a bit off and took a hella lot to get used to. The writing style was the main reason for this. By page 87 I was *this* close to leaving it unread. I struggled with this book, I really struggled with it. I have wanted to read this book for a long, long time and I really want to watch the movie. But this book is different, it's a literary fiction more than your run-off-the-mill YA dystopian- now nothing wrong with that genre but I am personally a little over it. General Thoughts: This is a dystopian novel. But the war is everywhere, and Daisy and her cousins must lead each other into a world that is unknown in the scariest, most elemental way. Despite the war, it’s a kind of Eden, with no adults in charge and no rules, a place where Daisy’s uncanny bond with her cousins grows into something rare and extraordinary. The next day bombs go off as London is attacked and occupied by an unnamed enemy.Īs power fails, and systems fail, the farm becomes more isolated. Her aunt goes away on business soon after Daisy arrives. Plot Summary: “Every war has turning points and every person too.”įifteen-year-old Daisy is sent from Manhattan to England to visit her aunt and cousins she’s never met: three boys near her age, and their little sister. ![]() ![]() ![]() I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is a timeless classic that has been inspiring readers for generations. ![]() This book forces us to confront racism head-on – something many would like to ignore or forget about altogether. As Maya grows older, she begins to understand more about what it means to be black in America and how that shapes her experience of the world around her. Throughout this book we also get an honest exploration into how racism affects people’s lives in various ways. Her ability to tell a story conveys both pain and hope – showing readers that we can find meaning even during our most difficult experiences. The narratives within this memoir are incredibly beautiful, using descriptive language to vividly describe the settings and characters that fill Maya’s stories. Even more impressive is her ability to remain hopeful during these trying times. Maya demonstrates an incredible amount of courage despite the obstacles she faces – from being sent to live with her grandmother to being raped by her mother’s boyfriend at the age of eight. This book is powerful in its depiction of the strength and resilience it takes to overcome adversity in life. Her lyrical story follows her childhood through adolescence as she navigates a world filled with racism and violence. The moving memoir, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou captures the struggles and triumphs of growing up in the middle of a difficult period in American history. ![]() ![]() ![]() As described in The Secret History, Justinian and Theodora are unfitting for Procopius' model of ideal Roman rulers. While he constantly glorifies the emperor's deeds in public documents, Procopius condemns Justinian and his wife Theodora behind closed doors, calling them a "pair of blood-thirsty demons of some sort."1 Because Procopius never made the couple's wrong doings a public affair during their reign, he could only denounce Justinian and Theodora in private while the rest of the empire celebrated their rule.
